Hello, world.

In the software domain, "Hello, world" is the name of the very first function you write in a brand new application or piece of software.

A bare-bones, simple, straight-to-the-point step 1: the words "Hello, world" printed onto your display.

It acts as a lone first brick in the foundation of whatever future you dream up, and then, hopefully, cobble together. The first step that the thousand-mile journey begins with.

Those words, and the underlying code that transforms them from idea to display, from dream to reality, are the base of everything else that you plan to create, and of anything that might come next.

And any developer, nay, any creator, with a few projects under their belt will tell you that what comes next, as well as what you end up with by the end of the process, is not *usually* what you planned in the first place.

Things have a way of evolving, morphing, growing as they go. Adapting and adjusting to new information, new learnings, new insights, new plans. Or sometimes based purely on personality, other people, politics, or potentially, a random whim.

So with that in mind, this blog post is that first step.

I needed to get something out - I’ve been waiting and waiting, using my perfectionism as an excuse. Saying I would, after X or Y.

So this is my way of getting something up so I can start to be more regular about my updates.

First and foremost because my parents told me that my updates let them know “I’m still alive” - and as someone who has been holed up in a coder cave building TimeAlign recently, I realize that might sound worse than it is.

However, aside from my mom’s mental health, there are a few other reasons I want to start publishing more:

  • - I have a lot to say (this comes as no surprise to those that know me 😛) and have always loved writing, but have been busy building.
  • - I am currently traveling the world and building a startup, and want to share my experiences and my learnings as I do.
  • - To publish more and force myself to create.
  • - To see if I can guilt my younger brother Austin into continuing and eventually completing the fiction book he is writing (called out, @Austin! 👀 I expect the next chapter by next week…).
  • - To externalize my thoughts, so I can refine them.
  • - To get other people’s thoughts on those thoughts, so that I can hone in on objective truth with clarity - and gain a better, more multifaceted perspective on life.

But also, "Hello, world" in this moment is for the adventure I’m embarking on.

Just last week I packed all of the belongings I could fit into a few bags and set out on a move across the globe alongside some of my best friends, my business cofounders, and a few other inspiring and creative individuals.

We are headed to Bali, Indonesia for a bit, moving our TimeAlign HQ (temporarily) as we prepare for our launch later this quarter.

That, plus spending some time together exploring, traveling, building, creating, learning. Taking photos, creating content, living life to the fullest.

Living the ethos of the TimeAlign brand - spending time the way we want, while we can.

As well as aligning with our dev team time zones, cutting costs, and creating the foundation for a globally-distributed, remote-first, results-driven company culture - building anti-fragility into our systems through a process of empiricism and testing.

In this way, we are piloting our global ops in a way that allows our exec team to still be in the same place while seeing firsthand where issues arise.

This has become a foundation of my mentality on building and testing - empiricism.

Running things through a pilot - a “tracer bullet” through the system - to see what and where things start to fall apart, so we can fill the cracks, strengthen the scaffolding, and scale up. You can often improve a system significantly just by using it, so long as you are paying attention - keeping at least one hand on the wheel, and one eye on the road.

I'll follow up more regarding plans in a future update, for now, just wanted to get this out, plus get my new site up! Check out my project links on the home page.

More to come, lots more.

So let’s take that first step, write that next line, and lay the first brick in the foundation.

From here, we build.

From here, we grow.

Where that ends up taking us... is to be discovered.

So "Hello, world",

I’m Jordan.
